WAITLIST INFORMATION
Professor O’Keefe keeps a waiting list for the course. A students who wishes to enroll in the course but who cannot do so (because the student has not completed CS 201 and CS 205, because the class is full, or for any other reason) should email Professor O’Keefe (d-okeefe@northwestern.edu) to ask to be added to the waitlist.
Until the first class meeting, enrollment is limited to those who have completed both CS 201 and CS 205. Those who have not satisfied this prerequisite, however, can ask to be added to the waitlist.
If the course is not fully enrolled at the first class meeting, spaces will be filled from the waitlist in the order that names were added to the waitlist (that is, without regard to whether the student has completed CS 201 and CS 205). Thus a student who has not fulfilled the prerequisite can still come to be enrolled in the course (if the student is on the waitlist and space is available).
At the second meeting (Wednesday 28 March), a prerequisite-check examination will be administered to all who are enrolled. (Details are available here.) If the course is fully enrolled, those who are not yet enrolled can sit for the examination, but without any assurance that a place in the course will ever be available. (In such a circumstance, a place in the course would become available only if an enrolled student were to drop prior to the last day to add.)
Guidance for specific situations:
“I want to enroll but I have not completed both CS 201 and CS 205”: You should email Professor O’Keefe to have your name added to the waitlist. If the course is not fully enrolled on the first day of class, spaces will be filled from the waitlist. If your place on the waitlist is sufficiently high to provide you a seat in the course, then you can enroll and take the prerequisite-check examination on Wednesday 28 March. If your place on the waitlist is not sufficiently high to yield a seat in the course, you can still take the preliminary-check exam, but without any guarantee that a seat in the course will become available.
“I want to enroll, but I have not completed both CS 201 and CS 205--but I have completed other similar courses”: You should email Professor O’Keefe to have your name added to the waitlist.
“I want to enroll, and I have completed CS 201 and CS 205, but the course is full”: You should (a) email Professor O’Keefe to have your name added to the waitlist, BUT ALSO (b) keep checking online to see if a seat becomes available. If a space becomes available, enroll in the course (and ask Professor O’Keefe to remove your name from the waitlist). If a space does not become available, you can still take the preliminary-check exam at the second class meeting (Wednesday 28 March), but without any guarantee that a seat in the course will become available.
